Is CBD Safe to Take with Other Medications?

Is CBD safe to take with other medications or substances?

This is a question that has become of increasing concern for many CBD users and an important concern indeed.

There isn’t exactly a short or clear cut answer to this question. Due to the nature of chemical compounds, each compound interacts differently with other compounds.

When compound A comes into contact with compound B, compound A does not affect compound B’s functions or performance at all; however when compound A comes into contact with compound C, the result can be very different.

While CBD can deliver a variety of benefits and was determined to be “generally safe” by the World Health Organization (WHO), it’s important to always consult with your doctor before trying any substance that you have not consumed before. Additionally, understanding what types of compounds CBD is known to interact with and how is crucial for any individual who is currently using or may use CBD.

What is CBD?

CBD, short for Cannabidiol, is one of many cannabinoids, or molecules produced within the cannabis family of plants. Along with CBD, there are nearly 100 other cannabinoids which have been identified in cannabis.

Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC ( the intoxicating component of the cannabis plant), CBD is non-intoxicating and will not induce the psychoactive or mind-altering effects associated with “being high.”

Essentially, CBD can deliver the many natural and beneficial properties of the cannabis plant, without the negative side effect of being high. Because of this, CBD has become increasingly popular in the United States and the world at large.

While studies and reports from actual users of CBD have indeed found that the substance can deliver a range of natural benefits, it’s important to not overlook if CBD is safe to take with other medications.

Will CBD Interact with Prescription Medications?

When two compounds come into contact for the first time, there’s no way to know for certain how they will react; by understanding the characteristics of each compound beforehand, doctors can predict the outcome of their interaction.

The issue some doctors have with CBD is that it is very new. Because of this, documentation of how it will interact with various medications is very limited.

That being said, it’s important to be cautious and clearly understand what CBD is and how it works within the body.

CBD, short for Cannabidiol, is a cannabis-derived compound that has been reported to deliver a variety of benefits by interacting with different compounds in the body, one of which is the cytochrome P450.

Cytochrome P450 is a group of liver enzymes that are responsible for breaking down drugs and toxins that enter the body. Studies have found that when the cytochrome p450 receptor interacts with a number of substances, including CBD, it’s activity can be inhibited.

By inhibiting the activity of this enzyme, CBD can temporarily deactivate its activity, which can alter how other compounds are metabolized.

Due to CBD’s ability to inhibit the Cytochrome P450 enzymes, you should not take CBD in conjunction with any prescribed medication without the approval of a certified doctor.
